Dark Roast

In 1995, Counter Culture was co-founded by Brett Smith, who was excited to build a great company, and Fred Houk, who was passionate about coffee and environmental stewardship. Together, they built a coffee roasting company devoted to sourcing delicious coffees from farms committed to the health of the natural environment.

This coffee was named long before we knew what the current circumstances across the globe would be, but from our coffee-driven team to you, we hope that our products have provided some sort of Sanctuary during these times. Look for tasting notes of dark chocolate, nougat, and grape in this blend.

Blend Components: 50% Finca Nueva Armenia, Guatemala dark, 30% Finca Nueva Armenia light, and 20% Toldopamba, Colombia

Story

Over the past quarter-century, our conversations with producing partners have taught us that there is no single model for sustainable agriculture. Our approach has taken different forms over the years, but our dedication to environmentally responsible coffee cultivation is part of our legacy and future.

In 1997, we launched the Sanctuary line of shade-grown coffees. Utilizing coffees from Latin America, these coffees raised awareness of the benefit of shade plants for the environment and for migratory birds. Though we still purchase many shade-grown coffees today, we know that coffee-growing communities are extremely diverse and many climates simply cannot support the type of lush tree shade we see in others.

This coffee is in memory of our co-founder, Fred Houk, who was an avid birder and environmentalist. Fred brought his coffee experience and his love for nature to Counter Culture, and was the catalyst for our Sanctuary line of shade-grown coffees.
